Handball drama! Arsenal rage as Maguire escapes penalty call in chaotic 3-2 loss to Man United
Arsenal’s first home defeat of the Premier League season was overshadowed by a controversial refereeing decision that left supporters furious and sparked intense debate online. During their dramatic 3-2 loss to Manchester United, Harry Maguire escaped punishment after the ball struck his hand inside the penalty area, a moment that many believed should have resulted in a spot kick.
The incident occurred with around 20 minutes remaining and United holding a narrow 2-1 lead. Mikel Merino unleashed a shot from close range, only for the ball to strike Maguire’s outstretched arm as the defender fell to the ground. Arsenal players immediately appealed, while the home crowd erupted in protest.
VAR swiftly reviewed the incident and cleared it, allowing play to continue without awarding a penalty. The explanation lay in a specific interpretation of the handball law, which states that a player is not guilty of an offence if the ball makes contact with a hand or arm that is supporting the body while falling. Officials deemed Maguire’s arm position to fall within that category.
The decision did little to calm Arsenal fans. Social media quickly filled with angry reactions, with many accusing the officials of inconsistency. Arsenal Fan TV questioned how the incident could be viewed as anything other than handball, while other supporters sarcastically suggested Maguire had turned into a goalkeeper.
Not everyone disagreed with the call. Some fans acknowledged that, under the current laws, such situations are rarely punished and that VAR had applied the rules correctly, even if the outcome felt harsh.
The controversy was one of several key moments in an entertaining match. Arsenal had taken the lead through a Lisandro Martinez own goal, before a mistake from Martin Zubimendi allowed Bryan Mbeumo to level the score. Patrick Dorgu then produced a stunning strike to put United ahead early in the second half.
Merino redeemed himself by bundling home an equaliser from a corner, setting up a tense finale. With three minutes remaining, Matheus Cunha delivered the decisive blow, curling a superb effort past David Raya to secure victory for United.
The win marked Michael Carrick’s second consecutive triumph since taking charge, maintaining his perfect start as interim head coach. For Arsenal, the defeat tightened the title race, leaving them just four points clear of Manchester City and Aston Villa. Yet it was the handball incident, rather than the final score, that dominated post match discussion and left a bitter taste for the Emirates faithful.
