Solskjaer’s current availability has strengthened his position. The 52-year-old returned to Manchester in September after leaving Besiktas and has maintained close relationships with several former players and staff members. Michael Carrick is also among the names discussed. The former United midfielder impressed during a brief caretaker spell in 2021, guiding the team through three unbeaten matches. For now, Darren Fletcher has been entrusted with temporary responsibility and will lead the team into their upcoming match against Burnley. Fletcher, who worked closely with Solskjaer during his time as manager, has publicly stated that his focus remains entirely on preparing the team rather than his own long-term prospects.

Speaking ahead of the fixture, Fletcher described the opportunity to lead Manchester United as a huge honour, while admitting the circumstances were far from ideal. He confirmed that discussions regarding the interim role would take place after the Burnley match.
