It’s happening again! Ole Gunnar Solskjaer set for shock return as Man United seek interim solution
The Red Devils are moving cautiously but decisively as they search for stability following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now widely viewed as the leading candidate to take charge on an interim basis until the end of the season.
According to multiple reports, United’s hierarchy believes Solskjaer represents the safest option during a sensitive period. The Norwegian previously stepped in as caretaker during the 2018/19 campaign, overseeing a dramatic upturn in form before earning the role permanently. That history has made him a familiar and trusted figure inside Old Trafford, particularly at a time when the club is keen to avoid further upheaval.
Amorim’s exit came after weeks of growing pressure, internal tensions and concerns over leadership. While the season remains very much alive, United are determined not to destabilise the squad further. The preference is for experience and continuity rather than a risky short-term experiment, especially with crucial fixtures approaching in both domestic and European competitions.
Solskjaer’s current availability has strengthened his position. The 52-year-old returned to Manchester in September after leaving Besiktas and has maintained close relationships with several former players and staff members. His understanding of the club’s culture, expectations and media environment is regarded internally as a significant advantage during a transitional phase.
Michael Carrick is also among the names discussed. The former United midfielder impressed during a brief caretaker spell in 2021, guiding the team through three unbeaten matches. Carrick has continued to develop his coaching credentials since then, but sources indicate that Solskjaer is currently seen as the more reliable short-term solution given his previous experience handling prolonged pressure at the club.
For now, Darren Fletcher has been entrusted with temporary responsibility and will lead the team into their upcoming match against Burnley. Fletcher, who worked closely with Solskjaer during his time as manager, has publicly stated that his focus remains entirely on preparing the team rather than his own long-term prospects.
Speaking ahead of the fixture, Fletcher described the opportunity to lead Manchester United as a huge honour, while admitting the circumstances were far from ideal. He confirmed that discussions regarding the interim role would take place after the Burnley match.
United’s immediate priority is to restore calm, unity and competitiveness after a turbulent period. Appointing an interim manager with strong ties to the club could provide much-needed stability while the board continues its search for a permanent solution. With decisions expected soon, the coming days may prove decisive in shaping Manchester United’s direction for the remainder of the campaign.
