It's official! Michael Carrick confirmed as Manchester United head coach until end of season

Manchester United have confirmed Michael Carrick as head coach until the end of the season, placing their trust in a familiar figure to steady the club after recent instability and guide the team through a crucial stretch of the Premier League campaign.

Michael Carrick is officially confirmed as head coach of Manchester United for the remainder of the season, ending a period of uncertainty following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim earlier this month. The former midfielder will take immediate charge, with his first test coming in Saturday’s Manchester derby at Old Trafford.

Carrick emerged as the club’s preferred candidate after discussions were held with both him and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. While United explored multiple short term options, senior figures within the club were impressed by Carrick’s vision and his plans to stabilise performances over the coming months. Sky Sports News understands that his calm approach and clear tactical ideas were decisive factors.

The decision to appoint a head coach until the end of the season was accelerated after United’s FA Cup exit to Brighton, a match overseen by caretaker boss Darren Fletcher. With only the Premier League now remaining, the hierarchy felt the team required clarity and leadership rather than continued interim management.

Carrick returns to a role he knows well. He previously served as caretaker manager in late 2021, guiding United to wins over Villarreal and Arsenal, along with a draw away at Chelsea. That brief spell enhanced his reputation within the club and reinforced the belief that he understands the standards required at Old Trafford.

Since leaving United, Carrick has gained valuable experience at Middlesbrough. Appointed in October 2022 with the club battling relegation, he masterminded a remarkable turnaround, leading them to a fourth place finish and the Championship play-offs. Although promotion ultimately eluded them, Carrick’s work was widely praised for its structure and attacking intent.

In the following two seasons, Middlesbrough finished eighth and tenth before Carrick departed in June 2025. Despite that, he remained highly regarded for developing a defined playing identity and improving young players.

Carrick will be supported by an experienced coaching team: assistant Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Travis Binnion and former teammate Jonny Evans. Darren Fletcher is expected to return to his previous developmental role once the transition is complete.

Speaking after his appointment, Carrick said: "Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honour. I know what it takes to succeed here; my focus is now on helping the players to reach the standards that we expect at this incredible club."

Director of football Jason Wilcox added: "Michael is an excellent coach and knows exactly what it takes to win at Manchester United."

United currently sit seventh in the Premier League, and Carrick’s immediate challenge will be to restore consistency and belief as the club continues its longer term search for a permanent head coach.
